PASCO – Athletes like Tyler Sainsbury were well aware of what unique conditions Mother Nature could present at the Pasco Invitational after last year’s treacherous meet featuring sideways rain, hail and a little bit of snow.

So when he looked at the forecast upon returning to Pasco this year, not a speck of precipitation or cold temperatures were in the making for the 60th annual meet, providing a chance to produce something so great it would catch the eyes of the rest of the country – such as a nation-leading time in the 1,600 meters.

Sainsbury, a senior from Rocky Mountain ID, threw down a personal best and new US#1 time of 4 minutes, 4.91 seconds to win 1,600 on Saturday at Edgar Brown Memorial Stadium.

Sainsbury time was less than a second off the meet record time of 4:03.97, held by former Rocky Mountain great Michael Slagowski back in 2016.

“Coming down, we just knew it was going to be quick,” Sainsbury said. “I ran 4:10 a couple of weeks ago, so I wanted to get the best out of this trip.”

Sainsbury’s teammate Landon Heemeyer, who took second in 4:10.65, paced the duo through the first 400 at 61 seconds, with Sainsbury then taking over the next lap heading as they both crossed the line in 2:03.

With under 400 to go, Sainsbury accelerated away from Heemeyer to put down a 57-second close, going on to win by six seconds.

“Last 400 was tough,” Sainsbury said smiling. “Was just trying not to ‘lock up’, which is when you’re not able to able to move your arms or legs. My goal was to get there.”

Minutes later, Sainsbury returned to the track to run in the fast section of the 400 and clocked a time of 51.08 to place fifth.

Heemeyer also returned to the track hours later to complete a solid double with a win in the 3,200, running 9:17.04.

Lake Stevens WA’s Grant Buckmiller put together a U.S. #18 time in the boys 400, running a lifetime best 47.10 to beat out Lake City ID’s Trevor Cogley (48.54) and Mt. Spokane WA’s Boden Gardner (49.24).

Addy MacArthur, a sophomore out of University WA, threw a three-foot PR to win the girls shot put with a mark of 42-8.50, moving her up on the sophomore national list to fifth. Post Falls ID’s Capri Sims was second with a throw of 39-9.50.

Dominick Corley, a junior from Mead WA, continued his upward trend in the boys 100 this season with another stellar performance and state-leading time of 10.45, besting West Valley of Yakima WA’s Benjamin Pupplo and his 10.76 in the final.

Rusty Lee of Sandpoint ID won the boys 110 hurdles in a season best time of 14.36 and followed with a second-place effort in the 300 hurdles, running a personal best 39.01. Walla Walla WA’s Jake Hisaw won the 300 hurdles in a state-leading 38.79.

Post Fall ID’s Annastasia Peters and Trevor Miller collected individual wins for the Trojans, with Peters running 10:36.00 to take the girls 3,200 and Miller throwing 168-6 to win the boys discus. Peters also led the Post Falls girls to win the distance medley relay in a time of 12:19.05.

Morgan Thomas from DeSales WA threw 131-9, just three feet within her PR, to win the girls discus.

Chiawana WA’s Kade Smith, a Washington 4A state champ in the triple jump, swept both boys the long and triple jump, setting marks of 22-2.50 and 45-4.25.

Kamiakin’s Aubrey Herrin jumped a personal best 37-9.25 to win the girls triple jump.

Walla Walla WA’s Brody Hartley won the boys 800 in a time of 1:57.86 and led the Blue Devils to a DMR title in 10:28.23.

St. George’s WA’s Josie McLaughlin, the defending Washington 1B/2B state cross country champion, outkicked Rocky Mountain ID’s Brighton Heywood by a margin of 2:17.32 to 2:18.64 to win the girls 800.

Richland WA’s Keenan Kuntz produced a 21.62 effort to win the boys 200, surging past Seattle Academy WA’s Reggie Witherspoon III (21.82).

Mead WA’s Evan Berg threw 173-10 to win the boys javelin over Connell WA’s Kellen Riner in 171-11.

The team of Gardner, Jackson Hale, Ben Sonneland and Bradley Runge led the Mt. Spokane boys 4x400 relay team to victory in a state-leading time of 3:24.49, edging out 3A for Walla Walla WA in 3:25.98.
